Instagram makes bad navigation good?
[ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS]
According to my phone’s Screen Time tracking, I browse Instagram on average about 50 minutes a day. That’s insane! Aside from just mindlessly scrolling through the “Search” menu that feeds me tailored content based on my views and content, it seems that sometimes I just was wasting time navigating the app.
An example of confusing navigation that I never realize in Instagram that the article was going to our own profile. Give it a try: go to your profile, then go to an old post and look at some likes. From the likes list, select a profile to view and look at their profile. Click on the home tab. Click on the profile tab. What do you see? Your friend’s profile… Why?!
What I loved about this article (aside from the awakens of non-intuitive design in Instagram) was the blunt reminder that there is no “right way” to design something like app navigation. Apps can teach users a new flow by risking learnability. If the app is successful, they’ll be like Instagram, otherwise, they’re just another app.

- Delay starting your UX portfolio.
- Cancel and reschedule UX mentor calls last minute
- Hoard a bunch of UX books but don’t apply the knowledge
Oz talks about why the barrier to entry to UX is higher now, and why doing the bare minimum no longer works. Now, since UX is a hot field, the main competitive advantage one can attain is a burning desire to want a UX job more than the next person.

Seductive Interaction Design: Creating Playful, Fun, and Effective User Experiences (Voices That Matter)
[BOOK RECO]
If you like reading about interaction design, you’ll love Stephen P. Anderson’s book. Take aesthetically-pleasing interface examples that you’d find in other similar books but view them from a more human-approach. There’s also an excellent walkthrough of the psychology behind “gamification”, a great method used to make mundane tasks more fun!
